WORDS BY PIERS TOWNLEY
For the more adventurous snow-seeker, the challenge, beauty and unique range of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains will prove an unforgettable journey. Leaving the bustle and manic activity of Marrakech’s Djemaa el Fna square far behind, an hour’s drive away takes you to the Oukaïmeden resort and its eight pistes. Though it’s higher than Val Thorens at 2,400m, this area is a far cry from your alpine resorts. If the snowfall has been favourable, there’s a superb black run to test those wanting to push their skills. Or, for something more unique, hire a mule and a guide and embark on a snow trek into breathtaking scenery. If you’re interested in your après ski being more tajine than raclette, then the Atlas Mountains offers a taste of a very different winter experience.
